�� Master of Occupational Therapy graduates achieve 100% board pass rate

��’s Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) program announced its graduating class in 2021 has achieved a 100% pass rate on their board exams. The students, who graduated in Autumn 2021, took their exams throughout the spring and summer of this year.

“Having a high pass rate on the board exam keeps ��’s Master of Occupational Therapy program competitive in recruiting students,” said Barbara Warnock, ��’s Program Director of MOT. “It reflects the ability of our graduates to compete for jobs in the field.”

The field of occupational therapy is a vital health care service that uses occupation as the basis for treatment of people of all ages with a wide variety of physical, developmental, and emotional disabilities. Occupational therapists help people acquire or regain the skills they need to live independent, productive, and satisfying lives. In ��’s MOT program, the curriculum focuses on bringing community involvement into the classroom to teach students how to build a better overall community.

“Our community experiences include 14th Street Community Center projects, Area Agency of Aging Fall Prevention Education, leading groups at the Counseling Center to support individuals in recovery, building therapeutic relationships with elders, and working with children in schools,” Warnock said.

Using these experiences, ��’s OT professors are aiming to teach their students how to provide treatment activities for clients individually and in groups, and also how to carry out treatment plans with a variety of allied health professionals.

“The faculty of the MOT program have high expectations and significant knowledge that gives me confidence and gratitude to the work they do when I see the students succeed,” said Warnock.

�� offers several degrees in occupational therapy including a two-year associate’s degree that prepares graduates for careers as occupational therapy assistants; the master’s degree that is also offered as an accelerated 3+2 degree for incoming freshmen who want to prepare for a career as an occupational therapist in five years; and the post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy designed for therapists interested in advancing their careers.

“Several programs at �� have also embedded tracks in their curriculums to enter the MOT program,” said Warnock. “These include Exercise Science, Health Science, Psychology, and Biology.”

The MOT program has continually witnessed high board pass rates among its graduates and has been ranked Top 185 nationally in the U.S. News & World Report’s Graduate School category.

Criteria for admission:

A college GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) at the end of the semester in which application is made. A grade of “C” or higher in all pre-nursing course work, which includes the first two semesters and the summer session of the pre-nursing curriculum. Nursing applicants must have a composite ACT score of 22 and a score of 18 in all ACT sections or greater than 20 hours of college credit.

To complete the admission process, you must present

Completion of health physical.
Current CPR Healthcare Provider certification.
State and Federal criminal background check.
Current negative urine drug screen (a ten-panel screen).

After graduating from Shawnee State with an associate's degree in nursing (and passing the NCLEX-RN examination), you'll have the option to work in hospitals, health care agencies and home health care agencies, just to name a few possible employers. Hygienists are employed in the following areas:

Private Practice
Public Health Dental hygienists may be involved in school-based oral screening of sealant programs, planning, implementing, and evaluating oral health education programs for dental professionals, medical professionals and the public.
Dental Marketing Employment opportunities may be available with companies that market dental-related materials and equipment.
Hospitals and Clinics Concerned primarily with the special oral health problems of the bedridden and chronically ill.
Teaching and Research Hygienists with advanced degrees may be employed in research or may teach in dental hygiene educational programs that help students to prepare for the profession.

Dental Hygiene AAS

Graduates of the Dental Hygiene Program at �� earn an Associate of Applied Science degree. The program is completed in 5 academic semesters that combine classroom, laboratory and clinical experience. All instruction is provided at ��. Graduates are eligible to take the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination as well as state and regional clinical examinations.

What is Dental Hygiene?

Dental hygiene is a vital health service component of dentistry and emphasizes oral health and the prevention of oral disease. Most dental hygienists are employed in private dental offices.

The hygienist's main function is to provide dental health education, home care instruction, and diet/nutritional counseling.

Dental hygiene services include performing oral prophylaxis, scaling and polishing of the patient's teeth to remove soft and hard deposits; dental charting and oral examinations; exposing and processing radiographs; applying fluoride treatments and sealants; and making preliminary impressions for study models.

A dental hygienist should possess fine-motor skills and eye-hand coordination. Dental hygienists should be able to effectively communicate with individuals, both one-on-one and during small group interactions.

Many states, including the State of Ohio, permit hygienists to administer local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation.

��’s Office of the Registrar has released the names of those students named to the President’s and Dean’s Lists within the university for the Spring 2026 semester.

Over 230 full-time students earned a 4.00 GPA to be named to this semester’s President’s List while more than 575 full-time students earned a 3.50 to 3.99 GPA for Dean’s List recognition this semester.

�� Awards Full-Tuition Scholarships to Top Performers at SUMS Math Competition

�� awarded full-tuition scholarships to the top two individual finishers in its annual SUMS Math Competition, held May 12. The event brought together 35 high schools from Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia for individual and team mathematics challenges.

The competition, hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Office of Admission, recognized top-performing students and teams with scholarship awards.

Rylan Wood, from Dawson-Bryant High School, placed first in the individual competition, receiving a four-year full-tuition scholarship to Shawnee State. Spencer Whitford, from Walnut Hills, earned second place and also received a four-year full-tuition scholarship.

Vibhuman Haricharan of George Washington High School and Jacob Lyons of Oak Hill High School tied for third place in the individual competition. First-, second-, and third-place finishers received Mathematica software licenses, provided by sponsor Wolfram Research.

Other top 10 finishers in the individual competition included Myles DeAtley of Valley High School and Logan Hamilton of Dawson-Bryant, who tied for fifth place. Seventh-place finishers were John Reed of North Adams High School, Coltrane Parsons and Leixun Mao of Athens High School, and Kaden Williams of Fayetteville-Perry High School.

The St. Joseph Central Catholic team placed first in the Quiz Bowl competition. Team members Gavin Simpson, Sophia Rowe, Alex Gnau, and Addison Murray each received a $1,750 scholarship and a Mathematica software license.

Valley High School earned second place in the Quiz Bowl, represented by Allen Smith, Myles DeAtley, Silas Lansing, and Ry Smith. Each team member received a Mathematica software license.

Bonus problem award recipients were Kendall Simpson of St. Joseph, Madeline Charles of Portsmouth High School, Isabella Niswander of Peebles High School, Gavin Simpson of St. Joseph, and Hayden Hubbard of Waverly High School. Awards included a Mathematica license and merchandise from the �� Bookstore.

��’s Mathematical Sciences Department offers degrees that provide a broad intellectual foundation in undergraduate mathematics, fostering reasoning and problem-solving skills, and gives the opportunity for students to combine their interest in mathematics with preparation for a variety of career options. The department also provides a wide array of undergraduate mathematics courses to support degree programs across campus. �� Celebrates Inaugural Head Football Coach Mark Snyder Across Three Regional Events

�� hosted three regional receptions to formally introduce Coach Mark Snyder as the University’s first-ever Head Football Coach. Events were held at Marting’s in Portsmouth, Ohio; Bellefonte Country Club in Ashland, Kentucky; and the Athletic Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio.

Coach Snyder brings 37 years of championship-level coaching experience to Shawnee State, including a national title at Ohio State in 2002 and a head coaching tenure at Marshall University. He has been selected to build ��’s inaugural NCAA Division II football program, which will compete in the Mountain East Conference beginning in fall 2028.

Each reception featured remarks from President Eric A. Braun and Athletics Director Gerald Cadogan on ��'s commitment to expanding opportunity for students and the region, followed by remarks from Coach Snyder on his coaching philosophy and plans for the program. Guests included alumni, community leaders, prospective supporters, and elected officials.

"This is an investment in athletics, but it's also an investment in our campus and our community," said Eric Braun, president of ��. "The enthusiasm we've witnessed at these receptions confirms that we are building something special here at Shawnee."

"We're the first generation to have a football program at this level in this area, and we're going to have our fingerprints all over this program for generations to come," said Mark Snyder, the first-ever head football coach at ��. "These receptions have shown me that this community wants its fingerprints on it too."

��’s football program represents a significant investment in student opportunity and regional economic impact. The program will join the Mountain East Conference in fall 2028, expanding ��’s NCAA Division II athletic offerings and bringing college football to the Scioto Valley for the first time.

�� Expands Advanced Manufacturing Training Through Partnership with ENGEL

�� is expanding hands-on training in its Advanced Manufacturing Center with the addition of a new injection molding machine provided by ENGEL.

The 85-ton all-electric machine expands lab capacity and supports program growth by allowing more students to participate in hands-on learning by producing plastic parts and gaining experience with industry-standard equipment used in today's manufacturing environments. It also introduces students to a different manufacturer, broadening their exposure to the tools and technologies found in the workforce.

"This addition represents a meaningful investment in our students and the future of advanced manufacturing at Shawnee State," said Adam Miller, interim dean of the College of Business and Engineering Technology. "Expanding our equipment strengthens hands-on, career-ready learning while reflecting a growing partnership with industry leaders and alumni that will continue to benefit our students and region."

The Tree Campus Higher Education program honors colleges and universities that demonstrate strong commitment to environmental leadership, urban forestry, and community resilience. Institutions must meet five core standards, including maintaining a campus tree advisory committee, implementing a comprehensive tree care plan, dedicating annual resources to tree management, hosting an Arbor Day observance, and engaging students in service-learning projects focused on trees and conservation.

Shawnee State has been recognized as a Tree Campus Higher Education institution since 2014, demonstrating a commitment to tree care, campus beautification, and environmental education.

The university’s efforts are supported by a campus tree advisory committee made up of faculty, staff, and student representation who work collaboratively to guide tree-related initiatives. �� Honors First Class of Portsmouth Promise Program

�� and Portsmouth High School celebrated a landmark milestone on May 8, 2026, honoring the first class of the Portsmouth Promise, a college-readiness initiative that awarded 22 local students with scholarships to attend ��.

The Portsmouth Promise was launched in 2025 through a partnership between �� and Portsmouth High School to increase college access and preparation among local students. The program addresses key barriers to higher education through structured advising, college-readiness workshops, campus engagement, and financial support.

During the ceremony, students were recognized with two levels of scholarship support: 14 full-tuition scholarships and 8 annual scholarships valued at $2,000 per year.

"We talk a lot about access and opportunity here, and this program is exactly what that means,” said �� President Eric Andrew Braun. “We want to make sure students have a pathway to succeed, and that we provide all the tools beyond just the scholarship to help them achieve their goals.

Throughout the program, students participated in workshops focused on application writing, FAFSA completion, financial literacy, career exploration, and academic preparation. They also received individualized advising through monthly check-ins with Shawnee State advisors to support goal setting and progress monitoring.

“Beyond financial support, Portsmouth Promise provides students with guidance, mentorship, and hands-on experiences that help prepare them for success in college and their future careers,” said Drew Carter, who helped launch and champion the Portsmouth Promise program. “Through workshops, advising, and skill-building opportunities, students gain confidence, develop leadership skills, and build strong connections that support their long-term success.”

Additional program experiences included campus tours, shadow days, faculty sessions, and family outreach opportunities designed to familiarize students and their families with the college admissions and financial aid process.

As students prepare to begin classes at Shawnee State this fall, the university will continue providing support beyond the admissions process to help students persist through graduation. The continued support was intentionally built into the program to help students successfully navigate the transition to college and remain connected throughout their academic journey.

“We didn’t want students to feel supported only up to the point of enrollment and then be left on their own,” said �� Director of Admission Rikki Butler. “We wanted to make sure they had a full set of tools and people behind them once they arrived at Shawnee State so they can succeed all the way through graduation.”

The Portsmouth Promise program demonstrates the continuing partnership between �� and Portsmouth High School to expand access to higher education and strengthen student success. Following the success of the inaugural cohort, university and school leaders are exploring opportunities to continue and grow the program to serve future classes of Portsmouth students.

�� Appoints Aimee Welch Executive Director of �� Foundation

�� has named Aimee Welch Executive Director of the �� Foundation.

As Executive Director, Welch will lead the �� Foundation’s operations and advancement efforts, guiding philanthropic initiatives that support scholarships, academic programs, and student success across campus. The �� Foundation supports ��’s mission by funding scholarships, enhancing academic offerings, and providing resources that benefit student learning and campus life.

“The �� Foundation plays a critical role in supporting our students and institutional priorities,” �� President Eric Andrew Braun said. “Ms. Welch’s leadership will be instrumental in strengthening the �� Foundation and ensuring continued support for scholarships, programs, and initiatives that directly benefit our students and community.”

Welch brings more than 15 years of experience at ��, including nine years of service with the �� Foundation. She most recently served as Director of Institutional Budgeting, supporting university-wide financial planning and resource allocation. Prior to that role, she served as Director of the �� Foundation, where she coordinated the ��F Board, led accounting and financial reporting, managed fund and real property portfolios, and oversaw donor relations and stewardship. She began her career at the university in Human Resources and Payroll.

“I’m honored to continue supporting �� through the �� Foundation,” Welch said. “As a student who could not have attended college without scholarships, I understand the lasting impact a gift to the �� Foundation can make in a student’s life. I look forward to building on the Foundation’s strong role in supporting student success and advancing the university’s mission through meaningful engagement with our donors, alumni, and partners.”

A 1998 graduate of ��, Welch earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She and her husband, Chad, along with their two sons, Gavin and Gabe, are all proud Shawnee State alumni.

Welch began her role in September 2025 and continues to advance the Foundation’s mission by supporting educational opportunities through philanthropy and community engagement.
