Starting at 黑料社 as an adjunct faculty member last semester, Dr. Lincoln Pettaway was hired as a management professor within the C.H. Lute School of Business at the start of Spring 2023. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Pettaway received his bachelor鈥檚 degree in Film & Communication from the University of Rochester, a master鈥檚 degree in Organizational Learning from Barry University, and his Ph.D in Management & Accounting from Cleveland State University. While still new to this area, he already feels 黑料社 is his home.
鈥淚鈥檓 super excited about this area and community,鈥 said Dr. Pettaway. 鈥淚 have family here with indigenous roots. When I take a look around, I think, 鈥榤y family is from here too鈥, and we鈥檙e proud! I just want to wrap this place around me because it is so beautiful.鈥
In addition to teaching courses in Business Ethics, Production & Operations Management, and International Business, Dr. Pettaway is looking forward to making connections with his students through advising as well as promoting research and community engagement projects within his classroom. One particular project that excites him is the possibility of working with students to develop an interface for nurses to monitor patient vitals in small amounts of time, allowing health care professionals the ability to gain a better grasp of their patient鈥檚 status quicker. 聽
Wanting to spark a passion in his students, Dr. Pettaway also desires to support and be there for his students as they manage different levels of stress and mental health wellbeing throughout their education at 黑料社. Having experienced harshly competitive academic environments in his past, he wants to focus on helping students find joy in learning and discovering worthwhile topics for their future careers.
鈥淲hat I鈥檓 trying to figure out is how to share information that students find useful,鈥 he said. 鈥淭his is always at the forefront of my mind when I鈥檓 teaching. I want students to say 鈥榯his is really interesting and I鈥檓 going to use it.鈥 It鈥檚 practical, but I also incorporate theoretical ideas so that students can get familiar with their thought-processes and problem-solving skills as opposed to the limits that are put in front of them.鈥
To his new students, Dr. Pettaway encourages them to take time to appreciate the opportunity they have to pursue a college education.
鈥淚 want students to recognize that not everybody gets to go somewhere to spend four years just to focus on learning,鈥 said Dr. Pettaway. 鈥淵ou get what you put into it.鈥
